Guidelines for picking books to donate:
Price:
- Even with donated books, we have to declare the value for customs duties, so cheaper is better. For this reason, we typically only buy the 50% off color at Goodwill.
- Generally, aim for $0.25-$0.50 for paperbacks, $1 for midsize and board books, and $1.50 for popular hardcover books.
Binding:
- The heavier the book, the more expensive international shipping will be, so prioritize paperback over hardcover.
Condition:
- The book must be in New, Like New, or Very Good condition.
- If there is writing in pen or marker besides a name in the front, or if there is more than just a little pencil, then don't buy.
- If there are creases in the cover, tears in the pages, water damage, more than a small amount of yellowing of the pages, or worn edges/corners, then don't buy.
Relevance:
- The kids reading these books are a mix of Westerners and locals, but all are learning in English. Books about American history and American-specific sports (Baseball, American Football) don't sell well.
Popularity:
- Books listed in Wanted Books below
- Generally, books that are popular should be prioritized. You can use the Amazon app to get a feel for whether a book is popular.
What to Avoid:
- Books that address gender identity issues
- Young Adult Vampire romance and occult-related stories (mildly scary is okay)
- Books specific to American culture, such as American Football, baseball, American History, etc.
- Christian books unless specifically asked for below
- Library bond books (difficult to remove the cover without damaging the book and there is too much weight otherwise)
