After 154 years as a congregation, why did we choose to change our name to The Grove
Covenant Church?
In short, we sensed God wanted to give us a name that better reflected and communicated what he has been doing in our midst over the past few years. As we have grown and changed, it seemed right to prayerfully consider a new name.
We found meaning in Ephesians 3:14-21, where the Apostle Paul speaks of a church that is "rooted and established in love.” It is this rootedness that will empower us to grasp the width, length, height, and depth of God’s love so that we might truly “know this love that surpasses knowledge” and “be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.”
This language of being rooted and established in love took us to the imagery of the Pando Aspen Grove in Fishlake National Forest, Utah, where we discovered several connections to the life of a healthy church community: a shared root system, interdependence, support, resilience, growth, and renewal.
We resonated with the aspen grove’s ability to care for other parts of the grove, sharing nutrients and water, supplying healing and restoration to those parts in crisis due to fire, disease, infestation, or drought. And we saw in this a powerful metaphor for the church.
These things speak of what God is doing in our midst and of who we pray we become, more and more: a tightly knit community, unified in vision and purpose, and loving one another sacrificially for God’s glory, for our own abundant lives in Christ, and for the sake of others, our neighbors.
We invite you to join us on this journey.
